Miami-Dade tops Broward in an All-Star wrestling matchup

Special to The Miami Herald

It was a dead heat with three bouts remaining in the annual Broward versus Miami-Dade All-Star wrestling meet Thursday night at South Broward High School.

When Coral Reef’s Daniel Perez beat Nova’s Mike Marshall on an injury default in a 220-pound bout, the Dade stars clinched en route to a 67-52 victory.

Two of Miami-Dade’s state champions — Southwest’s Nosomy Pozo and North Miami Beach’s Ritchie Guillaume — won their respective weight classes.

Pozo, who finished his senior season 36-3 at 132 pounds, was also a two-time district and GMAC titleholder. Since the FHSAA finals in Lakeland two weeks ago, he has only taken two days off as he prepares for the NHSCA High School National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., from March 29 to April 1.

“This season was awesome,” Pozo said. “It’s good to know all the hard work paid off. I’m really excited. The feeling’s great.”

Broward County has won the event just once — in 2011. Four-time county champion and Class 3A state runner-up Alex Uhre of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas capped his high school career with a 6-0 decision over North Miami Beach’s Markus Martinez in 113 pounds.
