As a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University, I’ve eagerly followed the progress of the football stadium project. I believe that moving forward with this deal would be disastrous. GEO Group’s record has received considerable media attention in the days since the announcement and the company’s response reveals a troubling lack of transparency.
Partnering with this organization is bad business. Each new allegation against GEO will reflect directly upon the university. Partnership with the GEO Group offers no synergy for potential sponsors, and many firms will be unwilling to see their brands associated with the prison-industrial complex. I doubt I’m the only alumnus who would think twice before giving back to a university that keeps such questionable bedfellows.
