Recap: San Diego vs. Kansas City

The Sports Network

James Shields threw one perfect inning in his Kansas City Royals spring debut to help his new team to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres in a Cactus League matchup.

Shields, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a blockbuster trade in December, struck out one and threw nine of his 13 pitches for strikes while setting down all three men he faced.

Will Smith followed Shields with three innings of one-run ball in which the lefty recorded five strikeouts, with Nate Adcock tossing a scoreless ninth to notch his first save of the spring.

Johnny Giavotella knocked in a pair of runs to pace the Royals offensively.

Jason Marquis fired two shutout frames for San Diego, which received a two-run double from Alexi Amarista in the loss.
