Following two seasons of being in the shadow of her more celebrated Boyd Anderson teammate Shayla Sanders, Kali Davis-White is looking quite comfortable in a new leading role.
On Sunday evening, Davis-White got her national Track Athlete of the Year campaign off to a rousing start by winning the Brooks PR Invitational 60 meters in a personal-best 7.31 (U.S. No. 2) at the University of Washington in Seattle.
“This means everything,” Davis-White said. “I feel fast. I didn’t think my start was that good.
“I think it was my closing. Everybody deserved to win it, but it’s a great feeling that I won it.”
Davis-White wasn’t able to match the 7.21 meet record set by Sanders last year, but she was presented with the “Gold Shoes” trophy.
It was a carryover from Davis-White’s indoor season opener at the Jimmy Carnes Youth Meet in Gainesville a month ago when she won the 55 meters (7.04) and 200 meters (24.52).
Davis-White led an All-American Florida contingent, which also saw American Heritage’s Deja Parrish finish third in the 400 (55.58) and St. Thomas Aquinas’ two-time state champion Kendall Ellis was fifth (56.07).
