Thoughts about the Civil War naturally diminish in South Florida with each passing year. So, it’s interesting to see letter writer Steven Willis thinking about one result of the conflict. In his Feb. 19 letter he references West Virginia’s succession from Virginia, then a Confederate state, during the Civil War. He goes on to suggest that South Florida should succeed from Florida, a former Confederate state, almost 150 years after the war’s end.
If such a thing happens, would Herald columnist Dave Barry be obligated to propose a new name for South Dixie Highway?
