Man arrested after hit and run accident in North Miami

A 45-year-old man was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital late Saturday after he was struck by a moving car in North Miami earlier in the day.

Philogene Charles was crossing the street on foot at Northwest 134th Street and Northwest 12th Avenue around 4:45 a.m. when the driver of a white Honda Accord hit him and kept driving, according to a release from North Miami Police.

He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center.

Witnesses described the white Honda, police said and officers found Willie Joseph Pitts Jr., about five blocks away asleep in the car.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries.
