LEO Awards honor Miami-Dade’s top officers of the year

LEO Specialized Services Division Award

•  Category One: Kathryn Sullivan, Bay Harbor Islands, and Jeremy Martinez, Indian Creek Village, nominated for saving a woman from drowning in the Intracoastal Waterway.

•  Category Two: Jose Baez and Cuong Nguyen, Coral Gables Police Department, nominated for rescuing a woman from an armed robbery and then capturing the suspect.

•  Category Three: Thomas Fleischhauer, Miami Beach Police Department, nominated for rescuing people from ships that were overturned and on fire.

LEO Safety Division Award

•  Category One: Sandra Block, Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, nominated for her work keeping residents safe.

•  Category Three: Lynda Roberts, Miami Police Department, nominated for career devotion to her city.

LEO Support Services Division Award

•  Category One: Lisa Corbin, South Miami Police Department, nominated for dedication to her agency in developing upgraded computer systems.

•  Category Two: Jennell Atwell, North Miami Police Department, nominated for her work as Public Service Aide.

•  Category Three: Ivonne Duran, Miami Dade Police Department, nominated for creating a program to decriminalize certain violations to ease courtroom and system overcrowding.

LEO State Agent of the Year Award

•  Winner: Jeff Portz, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, nominated for a career of dedicated duty.

LEO Federal Agent of the Year

•  Winners: Tyler Jett and Mabel Lezcano, U.S. Secret Service, for an investigation of financial and identity fraud crimes.

LEO State Prosecutor of the Year Award

•  Winner: Penny Brill, State Attorney’s Office.

LEO Federal Prosecutor of the Year Award

•  Winner: Roy Altman, U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Miami Dade Officer of the Year

•  Winner: Detective Oscar Plasencia, Miami-Dade Police Department, for shooting and killing an armed suspect who killed two officers in 2011.

•  Winners: Detective Rei Carvajal and Sgt. Jose Proveyer, Hialeah Police Department, for courage under fire while chasing two men who shot at them with an AK-47.
