Miami.com’s Lesley Abravanel fills us in on two free events associated with the famously pricey South Beach Wine & Food Festival:

From midnight to 2 a.m. Thursday at Miami Beach’s James Royal Palm Hotel, 1545 Collins Ave., and Friday at the Dream Hotel, 1111 Collins Ave., pork purveyor Smithfield will be giving away “Smithfield Versailles Cuban Combo” sandwich samples.

Also at the James Hotel, spectators are welcome from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday for Spike Mendelsohn’s Let’s Get Spiked: Chef Volleyball Tournament featuring Miami’s own Kris Wessel, Adrianne Calvo and Alberto Cabrera along with TV personalities Alex Guarnaschelli and Andrew Zimmern, among others; sobefest.com.

    ’Check, Please!’ returns Monday

  • Raise a glass at Gables Museum, Gotham Steak, Steak 954

    The Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables, celebrates the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s Florida encounter with a presentation on the history, culture and architecture of Granada accompanied by “a generous sampling” of Spanish wines. Tickets are $30 at 305-603-8067.
