Mario Cristobal leaving Miami Hurricanes to become Alabama offensive line coach

One month after being named associate head coach and tight ends coach at UM after being fired as FIU head coach, Mario Cristobal is leaving to join the staff of national champion Alabama.

Mario Cristobal’s fourth stint at the University of Miami sure didn’t last very long.

Hired by coach Al Golden to serve as associate head coach and tight ends coach a month ago after being fired as head coach at FIU, Cristobal on Monday accepted a job to become the new offensive line coach at Alabama.

UM has yet to confirm it.

Cristobal, 42, replaces former Hurricanes offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who was recently hired by new Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

Cristobal, who played and won two national titles at UM and served as an assistant coach from 2004 to 2006, interviewed for the job Friday in Tuscaloosa and spent the weekend pondering whether he should take the position, a source said.

UM hired Cristobal on Jan. 10, then lured offensive coordinator James Coley from Florida State. Coley was Cristobal’s offensive coordinator at FIU in 2007. The two are solid recruiters in South Florida.

Chris Yandle, director of communications for UM athletics, confirmed that 6-5, 251-pound defensive end Ricardo Williams is no longer on the team. A redshirt sophomore, Williams is out of Homestead Senior High. Williams played in one game last year – against North Carolina. 1369204473
