Miami Springs is sponsoring a crime-prevention seminar on Tuesday to raise awareness about neighborhood crime.
The city has experienced an unusual rise in cat burglaries, including one in which a retired police officer had her 9 mm handgun and FDLE badge stolen from her nightstand while she slept. Aside from stealing cars and jewelry, The Miami Herald reported last December that two teens broke into a home and stole $8,000 worth of high-powered weapons and 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
The police want the community to help be their eyes and ears.
Miami Springs police officers plan to hold a Residential Crime Prevention & Public Safety Presentation at the Rebeca Sosa Theater on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Police will discuss:
• crime prevention and residential security;
• how to recognize suspicious activity;
• neighborhood crime watch;
• tips to prevent burglaries;
• and pedestrian safety and traffic issues.
"It will be an informative presentation that will help you and your family better recognize the criminal element," said Sgt. Jimmy Deal, who oversees the department’s community policing office. "As well as how to make your neighborhood safer."
