The Miami Springs City Council voted 5-0 to amend an ordinance that permits adult-related businesses near Le Jeune Road on a first reading Monday.

In preparation for the meeting, council members each received a 64-page packet with exhibits and definitions for terms like “adult domination and submission parlor,” “lap dance” and “specified sexual activities.”

The ordinance would apply to a section of the city known as the Abraham Tract, which lies south of Northwest 36th Street.

Although the council found evidence that adult-oriented businesses may cause crime and affect property values, their presence was found to be consistent with the city’s “comprehensive plan.” One mandate would require sex-related shops to be at least 300 feet from one another.

There was no opposition to the code-change by citizens during the city’s open forum, even though the George T. Baker Aviation School, operated by the county, is located within the Abraham district.

A public hearing is set to take place before the second reading of the proposed ordinance on Monday, Feb. 25.
