Don’t confuse types of storm damage

The Feb. 13 story, At $50B Sandy was second-costliest storm, reported that “Hurricane Katrina, which flooded much of New Orleans in 2005, caused $108 billion.” What flooded New Orleans were the hurricane’s storm surge and flooding, due to the collapse of the poorly-built and designed levees, which were not built to protect the city from Category 3 hurricanes.

It’s important to know the difference between the real damages a hurricane causes, and the devastation from the collapse and failure of levees and floodwalls that aren’t built properly, or to the standards needed for protecting a major city like New Orleans and nearby areas from a Category 3, or higher, hurricane.
