The Mater Lakes baseball team has advanced to the regional playoffs each of the past two years.
But now the Bears, entering their seventh year as a school, could be ready for more serious contention.
Mater Lakes, which went 20-9 last season before losing in the Class 3A regional semifinals to Florida Christian, has 14 seniors led by catchers/designated hitters Alffredi Ramos and Vicente Amor.
On Tuesday night, Mater Lakes scored a major victory when it beat defending Class 5A state champion Plantation American Heritage 3-1. The Patriots are ranked sixth in the nation by Baseball America entering the season.
Amor went 3 for 4 and had a key double in the first inning to put Mater Lakes ahead early.
Bears pitcher Peter Llerena threw a four-hitter, striking out seven in six innings and giving up only an unearned run. Jonathan Lorenzo closed the game in the seventh.
