Sen. Marco Rubio’s rebuttal address to President Obama’s State of the Union speech was in both Spanish and English. In the past, ex-Rep. David Rivera, when addressing immigrants at their official U.S. citizenship ceremony, did the same, although the native languages of many were from numerous countries of origin. All are required to have a speaking knowledge of English as a prerequisite to becoming citizens where everyone is considered equal.
The reason for speaking a language other than English could be stated as honoring the many new Hispanic immigrants to our county. However, the simple truth lies elsewhere as speeches are now given in the Spanish language because that’s where the votes are.
