Cody, a golden retriever co-owned by several South Floridians, has won Best in Breed at the American Kennel Club’s 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
The 6-year-old male, AKC name Grand Champion Gemini Fallchase The Butler Did It, triumphed in the breed category with the most entrants: 61. He advances to the Best in Group judging for sporting breeds, Tuesday evening at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
His owners include Yvonne and Jose Herrera, and Maura A. Roxby, all of Broward County.
The Best in Group winners advance to the finals Tuesday night, vying for Best in Show. No golden retriever has ever won that title.
A hairless Chinese Crested named Barbie — Grand Champion Stillmeadow Solo in the Spotlight — owned by Sunrise breeders Mary Lou Patti and her daughter, Jennifer Patti, took Best of Opposite Sex in her breed category.
That honor goes to the best dog of the opposite gender of the Best of Breed winner. But Best of Opposite doesn’t advance in the competition to the “toy’’ group.
