From Miami Herald Staff Reports

With 11 runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Norland baseball team began its season in the win column in an extra-inning affair against North Miami on Monday.

The Vikings played small ball to produce a big inning in the extra frame. Utilizing their team speed, Norland batters bunted their way on and stole several bases to pressure the Pioneers into errors defensively.

Norland starting pitcher Sensei Jarvis gave up just two earned runs while striking out 11 in six innings. He went 4 for 5 with four RBI.

Felix De la Cruz homered, doubled and finished with five RBI as part of a 3-for-4 day. Chaeif Wright went 2 for 5 with a double and drove in three more.

Jarvis walked away with a no decision Monday after the Norland bullpen surrendered a four-run lead in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Kevin Harris was the winning pitcher.

MORE BASEBALL

Three-time defending state champion Archbishop McCarthy beat Gulliver Prep 3-1 on Saturday as part of the third annual Field of Dreams game at Marlins Park. It was held during the MetroPCS Miami Marlins Winter Warm Up.

Junior left-hander Brian Gonzalez, who also produced a two-run double in the first inning, earned the victory. The Raiders manufactured a run in the sixth on junior shortstop Joe Dunand’s RBI line drive to right-center field following a leadoff single, balk and groundout. The Mavericks countered with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on junior outfielder Brandon Vicens’ sacrifice fly.
