Team of the week

American Heritage girls’ soccer team: Powered by two goals from sophomore standout Melanie Monteagudo and one goal from Alyssa Robinson, American Heritage (25-2) blanked Ponte Vedra 3-0 to win the Class 3A state title — its seventh overall — and avenge its loss to Ponte Vedra in the 2012 title game.

Athletes of the week

Anthony Vazquez, Cardinal Gibbons, wrestling : Vazquez led five Chiefs westlers who won their weight class to help the Chiefs secure the Region 4-1A title.

Lance Tejada III, Blanche Ely, boys’ basketball : Tejada had 12 points and a game-high 10 assists to lead the reigning state champion Tigers over Northeast 67-42 for the District 15-7A title.

Alexis Pester, South Broward, girls’ basketball : Pester scored a game-high 20 points, including 10 in a row to start the game, as the Bulldogs (17-5) defeated Northeast 49-36 in the Region 4-7A quarterfinals.

Gio Jeovenetta, St. Thomas Aquinas, wrestling : Jeovenetta won the 170-pound weight class to help the Raiders win the Region 3-3A title.

Marquedis Bain, University School, boys’ basketball : The 6-6 center had a team-high 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the eventual District 13-4A champion Suns to a 62-52 upset of Cardinal Gibbons in the district semifinals.

Chase Singletary, Somerset, wrestling : Singletary won the 145-pound title at the Region 4-1A championships.

Khalil Millwood, McArthur, boys’ basketball : Millwood had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to an 80-68 upset of St. Thomas Aquinas for the District 16-7A title, the first in Mustangs’ history.

Raigyne Moncrief, American Heritage, girls’ basketball : Moncrief had a team-high 17 points to help the Patriots (20-5) hold off Boynton Beach 63-57 in the Region 4-5A quarterfinals.

BASEBALL

Three-time defending state champion Archbishop McCarthy beat Gulliver Prep 3-1 on Saturday as part of the third annual Field of Dreams game at Marlins Park. It was held during the MetroPCS Miami Marlins Winter Warm Up.

Junior left-hander Brian Gonzalez, who also produced a two-run double in the first inning, earned the victory. The Raiders manufactured a run in the sixth on junior shortstop Joe Dunand’s RBI line drive to right-center field following a leadoff single, balk and groundout. The Mavericks countered with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on junior outfielder Brandon Vicens’ sacrifice fly.
