Payne leads Reel Blue crew to Sailfish Challenge title

The crew of Reel Blue caught and released nine sailfish to win top team honors in Saturday’s one-day, three-inlet Sailfish Challenge headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, good for $25,870.

Reel Blue’s Jon Payne released four of his team’s sails as top overall angler. Runner-up Miss Annie released six sails, taking home more than $196,000 of the tournament’s $376,000 purse because the crew entered all the value-added prize categories.

Third-place Get Lit had five sails for $76,000. The fleet of 71 boats scored 102 releases.

• Rookie Drew Benton of Panama City, fishing in his first tournament as a pro, weighed in with 75 pounds 7 ounces of largemouth bass to win the four-day Wal-Mart FLW Tour event that concluded Sunday on Lake Okeechobee. Benton took home $100,000.

Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., was second with 70 pounds 8 ounces, good for $35,000.

• Marc Hollerbach and his crew aboard Fu won the 2013 Audi Melges 20 Miami Winter Regatta that concluded Sunday on Biscayne Bay. Paul Reilly’s Red Sky Sailing Team finished second. The event was hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club.

    Captain John Barker of Blue Waters Charters reported finding plenty of action for his clients fishing in 140 feet of water offshore of Government Cut. Using live bluerunners and threadfin herring his clients caught big kingfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna on the surface baits and large mutton snappers on the bottom baits. … Fishing on the Dream Catcher with captain Steven Lamp out of Key West, Rick Berry of Key Largo Rods and a few friends fished the Dry Tortugas area and had plenty of action from blackfin tuna and bonitos that ate bucktail jigs and Mirrolures cast around the sterns of shrimp boats. The tunas were up to 26 pounds. The group also had a nice catch of red groupers to 12 pounds that ate jigs tipped with bonito strips.
