Cabinet members shouldn’t be chosen only for ethnicity

Re the Feb. 5 story, Make room for Latinos in 2nd term Cabinet: I probably missed something while studying civics, government and constitutional law. I’ve always been under the obviously naïve assumption that Cabinet members represent all U.S.citizens, not just those of similar ethnicity.

Hector Sanchez, in effect, states the Obama administration must have Latinos in the Cabinet to advocate for issues of special importance to that community. There’s no doubt that there are more than qualified Latinos, but their selection on the basis of ethnicity makes me question the validity of Sanchez’s demands. The importance of a diverse administration is beyond question, but the good of us all must take precedence in selection of public officials.
