Cardinal Gibbons wrestlers romp in Region 4-1A final

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

•  Late Friday — District 13-4A semifinal — North Broward Prep 61, Pine Crest 58: Despite trailing Pine Crest for most of the game, North Broward Prep rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the defending state champions.

The Eagles will face University School, which eliminated Cardinal Gibbons in its semifinal, in the district championship on Saturday at 7 p.m.

•  Late Friday — District 13-4A semifinal — University School 62, Cardinal Gibbons 52: University School relied on its aggressive play — attacking the basket and tough defense — and beat Cardinal Gibbons (19-4) as the Suns pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Maquedius Bain led University School (15-7) with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Battle followed with 16 points and four rebounds.

•  District 15-7A final — Blanche Ely 67, Northeast 42: Using a ball-hawking defense, reigning Class 7A state champion Blanche Ely opened an 18-10 first-quarter lead and then broke the game open with an 11-2 run in the second quarter to defeat Northeast in the District 15-7A championship game at Boyd Anderson.

Leading 29-12 at halftime, the Tigers got three consecutive three-pointers from Richard Lee and Lance Tejada to go up 51-26 with 1:10 left in the third quarter. Lee had 15 points, Tejada had 12 points and 10 assists and Khalil Thomas added 9 points and 15 rebounds for the Tigers (22-1).

Hunter Osceola hit six three-pointers to finish with a game-high 20 points for the Hurricanes. Malik Price-Martin added 13 points.
