Chargers win regional title

Led by Ritchie Guillaume, North Miami Beach took Region 4-3A’s wrestling title.

North Miami Beach senior Ritchie Guillaume’s 4-1 decison over Christopher Columbus’ Daniel Harth in the 145-pound division epitomizes this season for the Chargers.

Guillaume, a GMAC and state runner-up as well as two-time regional finalist, beat Harth, who came in with a 55-2 record and county title to his name.

For the first time in the program’s history, according to coach James Pierre, North Miami Beach captured Region 4-3A with 189.5 points Saturday night at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral High School.

“We’ve been through some struggles — lost GMACs [while] most of our guys were out — but we came back as one and we won this together,” Guillaume said. “That’s all we want.”

In that county tournament, South Dade and Columbus finished first and second, respectively. North Miami Beach competed without three of its wrestlers and still managed third.

Heading into Day 2 of the regional meet, the Chargers trailed the Buccaneers by 11 points, but tied the Explorers for the most wrestlers sent to the finals.

Of North Miami Beach’s five, three won, including 170-pounder Courtney Stubbs. A two-time state qualifier, he remains perfect on the season with a 36-0 record after pinning Columbus’ Diego Garcia in 2:17. Immediately before his bout, teammate Marvyns Joseph earned a 4-2 decision over South Broward’s Nathaniel Delevoe at 160.

The Buccaneers, last year’s state runners-up to Brandon, fielded eight in the semis, but just three — all of whom won — in their respective finals. They placed second with 163 points.

South Dade sophomore Justin Ramirez, the state runner-up to five-time champion Rossi Bruno, won the 126-weight class with a 7-0 decision over North Miami Beach’s Lerch Oremar. Maleek Williams (113) and Isaiah Crosby (138) were also victorious.

Columbus and Southwest each took two individual titles.

In a rematch of the GMAC and District 15-3A 132-pound final, Eagle Nosomy Pozo earned a 2-1 decision over Explorer Damian Penichet, scoring his two points at the second period buzzer. Pozo has won all three of those bouts. Both have qualified for state in consecutive seasons.

South Broward’s Kevin Jacques, the defending heavyweight regional champion and fifth at state last year, improved to 54-1 and was the lone Bulldog victor. Miramar’s Alexander Lesesne (120), Braddock’s George Knowles (182) and Cooper City’s Jordan Sanchez (195) each earned titles in their classes.

“Undisciplined teams are losing teams, I always try to tell them that,” Pierre said. “You’ve got to be disciplined. We’re just working. It’s our time.”
