It would suffice to say that the Chiefs, who are hosting the regional, lead all schools with a team score of 89.5, but in regional play, the focus is to see how many individual wrestlers the team can get to advance to states – the four wrestlers to reach championship and consolation finals in each weight class advance.
Coming into regionals, Cardinal Gibbons coach Frank Pettineo’s initial goal was to get 10 wrestlers into states, but after seeing Friday’s results, he’s getting a little greedier.
“Still I’ve got to have at least 10,” says Pettineo, who’s coached wrestling at Gibbons for 25 years, winning four team state championships and leading 24 wrestlers to individual state titles. “But if we can get 12, we would be in better shape, so 10-12 puts us in a good situation.
Twin brothers Jamel (120) and Jamal (126) Morris will put their undefeated records (35-0 each) on the line to try and get back to Lakeland.
