They don’t call it “FanFest.” And they’re no longer holding any “Town Hall” meetings so that fans can ask questions and voice their complaints – probably for good reason.
But the Marlins’ newly minted “Winter Warm-Up” (just in case you were feeling a tad chilly) at Marlins Park on Saturday will bear many of the same trappings of its predecessors from years past.
Single-game tickets for the 2013 season will go on sale, and fans wanting to buy season ticket packages can sit in and select their seats.
Players will be signing autographs, and fans can stroll the ballpark and enjoy rides, games and other activities.
In addition, Archbishop McCarthy will face Gulliver Academy on the field at 11 a.m.
The Winter Warm-Up is free and open to the public, lasting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fans also can buy tickets online at either www.marlins.com or www.marlinsbeisbol.com.
Veteran Figgins signs contract
The Marlins on Friday signed Chone Figgins to a minor-league contract with invitation to spring training.
Figgins, 35, spent the first eight of his 11 major league seasons with the Angels, where he put up strong numbers and was known for his versatility. Figgins has played all three outfield positions and every infield spot except for first base.
But after signing a four-year, $36 million deal with Seattle after the 2009 season, Figgins flopped, hitting below .200 in each of the past two seasons and was released with one year and $8 million remaining on his contract.
The addition of Figgins brings to 74 the number of players who will be in camp when the Marlins open spring training next week. In addition to the Figgins signing, the Marlins on Friday outrighted Bryan Peterson to Triple-A New Orleans and extended the outfielder an invitation to spring training.
