I have a relative, an American citizen, who is in her 1ate 40’s and has worked at various jobs. Her last employer was Wal-Mart for whom she worked a number of years. The work there was very heavy and she occasionally had to have a few days off and was subsequently dismissed with no way to protest.
She applied for unemployment benefits and food stamps because she had very little savings. After 1 1/2 years the unemployment compensation ceased with no recourse.
Letter writer Lisa Lopez stated that SSI provides a safety net, even to immigrants who have never worked in this country and are unable to communicate in English and at times have bogus disabilities. What is wrong with this picture?
