American Heritage broke through in the 29th minute on a Chris Mealer follow-up shot that the Jaguars could not clear out of the box to take a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots tacked on their second goal in the 48th minute. On a Jamar Campion-Hinds run on right wing, he crossed a pass into the box, which Franco knocked into an empty net to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
The few chances that Pines Charter (19-6-0) had on goal, the Patriots defense was able to recover and clear the ball out of its half of the field.
Franco added his second goal in the 79th minute to complete the scoring for the Patriots.
MALCOLM SHIELDS
• Region 4-2A semifinal – Delray American Heritage 1, North Broward Prep 0: A sloppy first half, followed by an unexpected strategy from its opponent turned out to be North Broward Prep’s downfall as it dropped its third out of four matches this season against visiting American Heritage-Delray.
The Eagles were unable to break down Heritage’s defensive shell in the second half and ended its season with a 1-0 defeat against its district rival.
Heritage will face Gulliver in the regional semifinal Tuesday.
The lone score came in the 18th minute when the Stallions’ Austin Mills hit a 15-yard shot near the left pole off Greg Joseph’s pass from the middle.
The Stallions (19-3-2) managed to hold on while frustrating North Broward Prep (19-7) by placing six defenders in the backfield throughout the last 40 minutes of the game.
“I put three forwards (Josh Creighton, Jason Shortbridge, and Diego Montes) for most of the half,” coach Diego Cardona said. “And yes, it was frustrating, but sometimes soccer is not a logical game.”
“We didn’t play as well in the first half when we had our chances.” Eagles junior playmaker Mateo Correa said. “I thought maybe we were nervous, but in the second half we attacked better, but got frustrated with the way they stacked the back[field].”
In a match that saw plenty of sloppiness and physical play (seven yellow cards), the opportunities were sporadic with Heritage outshooting the Eagles 11-7
After the goal, the rest of the half was played with both teams struggling to work the ball cleanly past the midfield. Both teams had four shots on goal through the first 40 minutes of play.
