The Florida Retirement System pension plan is always rated in the top five pension plans. It had a funding ratio of over 100 percent before Gov. Scott and the current crop of conservative Republicans began to manage it.
They create crises by claiming that a funding level still above the recommended 80 percent is problematic, an effort to destroy, on a malicious whim, the successful, reasonable and cheap FRS.
Pensions have been a part of the economic landscape since the civil war. Efforts should turn to remaking a pension system that works for all. They could be made portable just like the 401(k).
The FRS should be used as the model for both public and private pension plans. Most people will be unable to retire comfortably without them.
