State representative John Wood missed the key point in his Jan. 17 Florida fiscal cliff letter. He argued that Citizens Insurance attracts more homeowners because its rates are too low. In fact, South Florida’s homeowners with private insurers suffer because rates are too high and payments have risen to unsupportable levels, particularly for seniors on Social Security.
Our Social Security income has risen a mere 1 percent, but the private insurer almost doubled the homeowners’ premium in the last two years. Seniors flock to Citizens because rates charged by private insurers are too high. If that escape were to be closed, as John Wood promotes, more seniors will be driven out of their homes. Politicians need to act to help seniors keep their homes.
