Get opinion first before jumping into eye surgery

Q. I am 21 and have droopy eyelids — one is lower than the other. My mother had her eyes done a few months ago and she looks great! She is 45; do I have to wait until I am that old to have my eyelids done?

No, but you have many things to think about before you go into surgery. You say your eyelids are droopy. That may be caused by two t problems. If your eyelid is covering the pupil, you may have ptosis, a condition that can be congenital or acquired.

You should have an ophthalmologist check to make sure that it is not because of a more serious condition that’s affecting your eye muscle from pathology in your brain. Usually it is not a serious problem but one of cosmetic interest. If you do have ptosis, it may need to be repaired to correct visual impairment. It is best to see an oculo-plastic surgeon who is experienced in this kind of surgery.

If, on the other hand, your problem is excess eyelid skin, you can have this corrected with a blepharoplasty, the removal of excess skin and fat. This is a common surgery that is performed by a facial plastic, plastic or oculo-plastic surgeon. Make sure to get an experienced one.

Once you have done this surgery it is rare that you will need it again in your lifetime.

How to choose an assisted living facility

    Q. I live in California and have a formerly independent, elderly father in Tamarac, who is deteriorating following a mild stroke and is becoming an increasing burden for his partner, who lives with him. He has an extensive support network of friends in South Florida and doesn't wish to relocate to California, where my brother and I could more easily support him. I need to find an assisted living facility (ALF) for him in the Tamarac area. I certainly intend to travel to Tamarac and inspect the facilities personally, but it would help me a great deal to have a starting point.

Mohs cancer surgery tries to spare tissues

    Q. I was just told by my dermatologist that I would have to undergo a Mohs surgical procedure. I had a friend who had that and told me that they left her a big hole. What can you tell me about Mohs surgery?
