Updated tale opens at No. 1

 

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters cooked up $19 million in its opening weekend. Paramount’s R-rated action film update on the classic fairytale starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton topped the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Other films opening over the weekend didn’t fare as well. The crime thriller Parker, starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, debuted in fifth place with $7 million, while Relativity Media’s raunchy ensemble comedy Movie 43 opened in the seventh spot with $5 million.

Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said it was the first time box-office grosses were down over last year after four up weekends.

Universal’s supernatural horror film Mama starring Jessica Chastain dropped to second place with $12.8 million in its second weekend.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

10. Les Miserables, $3.9 million.

    Thought Bad Girls Club: Miami was over the top? Steel yourselves for another spinoff, Bad Girls All Star Battle, which takes the rivalry out of the mansion and onto the playing field in L.A. Fourteen of the franchise’s most notorious cast members compete for $100,000 and the title of “Baddest Bad Girl of All Time.” Can’t beat that on the obituary. We talked to Ray J, host of the show, which debuts 9 p.m. Tuesday on the Oxygen Network.

    Rob Pattinson & Kristen Stewart: Is it really over?

    It’s looking permanent this time. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are on a break again. Apparently, the Twilight costars couldn’t get past Stewart’s affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders last summer.That fling may be ongoing. In April, the Web was aflutter with pictures of her and the soon to be divorced Sanders in a car together.

    ‘Glades’ star Jordan Wall to appear at fundraiser, talks season 4

    Burn Notice may be over, but we can still get our fix with The Glades. The South Florida-shot A&E cop “comedrama” picks up again Memorial Day, and one of its stars, Jordan Wall, is making the rounds Monday. The actor, who plays Daniel Green, the resident nerd in the medical examiner’s office, will appear at an event for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America 7-10 p.m. at Cafe Iguana in Pembroke Pines. Up for grabs will be an auctioned walk-on role on The Glades.
