Miami Herald Staff Report

A hotel chef was killed Monday morning in a hit-and-run crash in front of the Shelborne Hotel in Miami Beach, yards from where he worked.

Police identified the pedestrian as 49-year-old Stefano Riccioletti, a hotel chef at the Shore Club and the father of two, who was killed while crossing the street at Collins Avenue and 18th Street.

A witness directed a 911 operator and officers located the suspect, Karlie Tomica, 20, who faces charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and possibly DUI after toxicology reports are done. She was arrested four miles north, in the 5600 block of Collins Avenue.

“In a lot of these cases we eventually find them, obviously this witness helped us out tremendously,” Sgt. Bobby Hernandez told Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Tomica was released from the Miami-Dade jail Monday night after posting a $10,000 bond. Visibly upset, she ran from television cameras waiting for her outside the jail.

Lucy Martin, general manager of the nearby Shore Club, issued a statement about Riccioletti, the worked at the hotel as a chef.

“He was a valued member of our team and will be greatly missed,” Martin said.
