A horrific robbery Thursday ended with a woman in critical condition after the robber shot her in the face, according to Miami police.

The robbery happened at 5:30 p.m. near Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest 53rd Street, police said. The woman was leaving a restaurant and walking up to her car in the parking lot when an armed man demanded her purse.

The woman, a mother of two young children and identified as Evelyn Matamoro, gave up her purse. But that wasn’t enough to please the robber, police said.

Once he had her purse, the robber shot her in the face.

“She was literally ambushed,” police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said.

The robber got away in what police believe might have been a gray Dodge Charger.

Matamoro was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she was in critical condition.
