Q. I am from Toronto, staying in South Beach. Please tell me if these restaurants are decent: Lantao, Katsuya at the SLS hotel and Sugarcane in Midtown.
All three are certainly “decent,” but seeing as you are from Toronto, I don’t think you will be overly impressed with Miami’s take on Asian food. Katsuya, especially, is more of a place to have cocktails and see the beautiful people. I prefer The Bazaar by José Andrés at SLS.
Sugarcane is also fun, but not necessarily worth crossing the bridge for, especially if you are paying for a taxi. Lantao is a hidden treasure, but modest and not “the one place” you must dine when in town.
The Fontainebleau has some great restaurants, including Hakkasan and Scarpetta. For a lovely Indonesian experience, consider Indomania. But when in Miami, you must also experience Cuban food. Consider David’s Cafe or Puerto Sagua. Other South Beach faves include Yardbird, Macchialina and Pubbelly.
