MBF enters deal with St. Pete insurer

MBF Healthcare Partners, the Coral Gables investment firm led by Miguel “Mike” Fernandez, announced Wednesday it has entered into a Letter of Agreement to purchase certain assets of Universal Health Care Group, a St. Petersburg company.

MBF said the deal is expected to close this quarter.

Tampa Bay area news sources have been reporting that Universal has been struggling with financial difficulties. The Tampa Business Journal said the insurer recently laid off employees and stopped signing up new members.
