Singer’s 35 points propel Ransom to 9th win in a row

Ransom Everglades’ boys’ basketball team has not lacked scoring punch the past couple of years, thanks to senior guard Sam Singer.

But with the return of junior center Alonzo Mourning III and an improving supporting cast, the Raiders are starting to look complete enough to make a prolonged run this season.

On Tuesday night, Ransom Everglades scored one of its most-impressive victories yet, dominating Booker T. Washington from start to finish in an 84-59 victory at the Tornadoes’ gym.

Singer, a California commitment, entered the week averaging a county-best 27.7 points per game. But Tuesday, he showed off his overall versatility.

Singer finished with 35 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds to lead the Raiders (17-2), who won their ninth consecutive game.

Mourning finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Mourning sustained a fractured finger and missed the early part of the season. Since his return, Ransom is 10-0 with him and Singer in the lineup.

“We had circled this game on the calendar as one of the big games we felt we needed to win,” Singer said. “We came out with a lot of energy early and hit big shots.”

The Raiders led by as many as 36 points in the second half and never trailed in the game as Singer anchored a sharp shooting effort that overshadowed Ritchie Spiller’s 23-point effort for Booker T. (17-4).

Senior guards Julian Marx and Khambrel Roach each hit three three-pointers. Marx finished with 17 points, and Roach had 15.

Ransom Everglades is looking to advance to the regional playoffs for the first time since 2009.

“We are a more-balanced scoring team with [Mourning] in the lineup, and he helps so much with the way he can affect shots defensively,” Singer said.
