Coral Springs Christian stuns Norland in boys’ basketball

Pinning a shot against the backboard on one end, and racing downcourt to convert a three-point play on the other, Coral Springs Christian star 6-7 forward Nura Zanna slammed the door on reigning Class 6A state champion Miami Norland on Saturday.

Zanna proved the difference in a hard-fought physical matchup, pouring in 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking three shots to help the SourceHoops Class 3A No. 9 Crusaders rally for a 47-45 upset of the Class 6A No. 1 Vikings at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at Miami Central.

“I had to show leadership,’’ Zanna said. “It was a three-point game. Everybody in the fourth quarter, in crunch time knows my team puts trust in me. They give me the ball. They know I am going to do something.”

Brandon Spencer added 11 points for the Crusaders and Lawrence Barnes complemented another stellar defensive effort from the wing with 7 points.

But the story was Zanna, who fueled yet another stirring comeback after singlehandedly beating Class 3A No. 2 Sagemont on Wednesday.

The Crusaders were staring at a 44-39 deficit with 4:15 left after Norland’s Ryan Mike hit a three-pointer before mounting its most impressive comeback of the season.

Crusaders eighth-grader Jeffrey Prophete answered with his own three-pointer to cut the lead to 44-42 before Zanna converted a three-point play after getting fouled by Maljhum McCrea with 2:46 left to forge a 45-45 tie. Zanna then pinned McCrea’s shot on the other end and converted the winning points on a nifty up-and-under play with 1:24 left.

Norland guard Zach Johnson had a chance to tie the game with 1:14 left but missed two free throws, and backcourt mate Shering Henry missed a late three-pointer.

Dewan Huell led the Vikings (16-4) with 10 points. Tyrell Williams and Dalvin Roberts added eight each.
