Special to The Miami Herald

• MLK Classic – St. Thomas Aquinas 71, Columbus 54: Using a balanced effort, St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Miami Columbus.

The Raiders had four players have double-digit point totals, led by Steven Haney’s 15 points. John Hunter was right behind with 14 points and Jason Wilkinson and Matt Maturah finished with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Columbus fought throughout, closing its deficit to within three and four points multiple times throughout the second and third quarter. St. Thomas’ height advantage and timely shots by Haney and Maturah kept the Explorers at bay.

Senior guard John Minervino did score a game-high 22 points for Columbus — hitting three three-pointers in the process — and Kevin O’Brien added 14 points, but no other Explorer produced much offensively.
