Centuries before New Age gurus extolled the virtues of meditation, monks in monasteries, nuns in convents and larger forces in cathedrals across Europe sang Gregorian chant. These solemn, repetitive prayers were intended to transport worshipers to higher realms beyond the earthly affairs of the day.
Seraphic Fire recreates the sounds and atmosphere of this early choral music with Gregorian Chant: Ave Maria, a program that ranges from 13th century chants to works they inspired by later composers. It provided respite from the Brickell Avenue bustle to a full house at Miami’s St. Jude Melkite Catholic Church on Wednesday evening.
