With the focus on our country’s deficit, one area that Congress should pay attention to is immigration and welfare policies that affect every taxpayer. Disability benefits are paid to claimants who enter the United States and are considered “disabled” under our SSI program, sometimes for life.
SSI provides a safety net for people of low or no income or resources, regardless of whether they ever worked here and contributed to the system. This generous program is backlogged and too often abused with frivolous disability claims. The ability to communicate in English is also considered in determining disability. After reading the Jan. 12 article, New world of travel opens up for Cubans, the American taxpayer should be very concerned.
