Two words: Nude illusion. The (some would say) outdated style rocked the red carpet at Golden Globes Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We also saw lots of glitter, tutu-esque hemlines, fish tails, bright colors and naked backs on parade. All in all it was a high-priced mashup.
A few looks:
Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen: With a neckline like that, who needs million dollar jewels?
Olivia Munn: The Magic Mike actress sparkled in a strapless column by Giorgio Armani with herringbone beading on the bodice. Class act all the way.
Naomi Watts: If you’ve got a great spine, show it off. The Impossible star dazzled in the color of the season, oxblood. Zac Posen gets props.
Kerry Washington: That champagne Miu Miu was gorgeously gossamer.
Michelle Dockery: The Downton Abbey cast member was a portrait of a lady in an Alexandre Vauthie cream shift with ravishing golden embroidery up top. Bring back shoulder pads!
Bonus: Taylor Swift was a fashion force to be reckoned with in her stately burgundy Donna Karan.
Jennifer Lopez: The powerhouse entertainer chose something that resembled her great aunt’s tablecloth, a creamy, lacy, long-sleeved Zuhair Murad. But boy, does she have a bod.
Nicole Richie: A rare misfire from a bonafide fashionista. Her robin blue design by Naeem Khann would have looked more at home gracing a window.
Debra Messing: It’s OK that the Smash star isn’t stick thin (actually, more power to her!), but the crumpled black dress that resembled a 1992 prom reject didn’t help matters. If you’re doing black, do sexy like Katharine McPhee (Theysken’s Theory) or slitty like Eva Longoria (Emilio Pucci).
Jessica Chastain: It’s hard to know whether to blame Calvin Klein or her tailor for this one. Jessica, you’re a famous movie star now; time to act accordingly.
Marion Cotillard: The Rust and Bone beauty’s orange asymmetrical tea length dress by Christian Dior Haute Couture is ideal for a day strolling on Ocean Drive. Awards ceremony? Don’t think so.
Bonus: Halle Berry: She’s always a knockout — this time in Versace — but her snazzy print suffered the same fate: too casual. The Globes are not dress down Fridays!
