Re the Jan. 7 editorial, Red-light cameras are producing safer streets: My introduction to red light cameras in Aventura had nothing to do with revenue as several years ago my wife was nearly killed in an intersection accident caused by a red-light runner. Our commission’s purpose was safety of the motorists and pedestrians.
At only four Aventura intersections with cameras, the result has been a dramatic reduction of every type of crash; there were 1,894 in 2010, 1,439 in 2011 and 1,102 in 2012. That tells us that when people know the cameras are there, they will modify their behavior. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2008, there were 762 deaths nationwide due to drivers who ran red lights. Even if our camera program resulted in one life saved, that would have justified the program.
