BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Darrion Allen might be the least known of Blanche Ely’s four-guard star lineup, but he made sure Deerfield Beach will remember him for some time to come.

In front of an overflow crowd that came out to see two No. 1 teams square off at Blanche Ely, Allen’s game-high 27 points helped the reigning Class 7A state champion Tigers storm back from a 15-5 first-quarter deficit and beat Deerfield Beach, ranked No. 1 in 8A, 72-60.

“Darrion showed his senior leadership,” Tigers coach Melvin Randall said. “He was on fire. He came out of his shell and really sparked the team. Defensively as well as offensively.”

Allen was a highlight reel onto himself, pouring in 11 second-quarter points to help the Tigers (15-1) dig itself out of a 20-11 first-quarter deficit.

Deerfield forward Marcus Owen owned the spotlight with 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter before Allen came alive.

Allen started his surge with back-to-back three-pointers that cut the lead to 25-22 with 4:31 left in the second quarter that swung the momentum to Ely, which drew within 32-31 at the half.

Allen picked right up where he left off before intermission pouring in 16 points in the pivotal third quarter to help Ely build a 54-42 lead they would not relinqish.

Allen capped the spurt with his third three-pointer with 58 seconds left in the third quarter.

Khalil Thomas dominated inside for the Tigers and finished with 18 points. Richard Lee added nine points.
