It is understandable that if part of Bear Cut Bridge is deemed unsafe, it should be closed and the danger immediately addressed.
Though the traffic redirection will be painful as this issue is resolved, we all would rather have a safer bridge. However, at present, the intersection on Virginia Key just before the bridge presents a very dangerous situation.
The pedestrian crossing light has been disabled, the traffic light is set to blinking yellow/red, and pedestrians are left to play a real-life game of Frogger to fast-moving, unyielding traffic, and there are no other nearby intersections to cross. I find it irresponsible of our local officials to leave this intersection as it is for any amount of time. While we understand officials must do what’s needed, it’s unacceptable that they trade one dangerous situation for another.
