Woman fatally shot on Liberty City street

Someone — possibly in a truck — fired the shots that killed a woman who was talking to a friend on a street.

A van with several bullet holes, in the 1200 block of Northwest 53rd Street, was the backdrop in the shooting death of a woman Monday night.

Police are looking for clues in a shooting that left a mother mortally wounded on a Liberty City street.

The woman, a 38-year-old mother of three, was shot after 8 p.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Northwest 53rd Street. Miami Fire Rescue took her to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she died.

Police have not yet identified a shooter or a motive.

Terdarus Washington, a neighbor, gave this account:

Washington, 25, saw the woman when he returned to his home in the neighborhood on Monday night. She was hanging out on the sidewalk with a male friend on a bicycle.

About a minute after he stepped inside his home, Washington said, he heard three gunshots. As he went to the front door to see what happened, he heard 10 more.

Washington said he saw the woman hanging onto the fence in front of 1254 NW 53rd Ave., bleeding from gunshot wounds.

Her friend went to get towels to try to stop the bleeding, and Washington brought her a glass of water.

“I just went over there to see if I could lend a hand,” Washington said.

“We just wanted to help.”

As the friend tried to stop the bleeding, the woman started shaking and vomiting blood.

Police arrived 25 or 30 minutes later after having trouble finding the location, Washington said.

The friend told Washington the shooter was in a truck.

Washington believes the shooter had to be aiming for the woman or her friend since they were the only two people on the street.

Washington also said the woman’s husband told him she was pregnant, although other neighbors said she wasn’t.
