Bal Harbour’s council shut down an ordinance that would have prohibited new businesses in the village’s oceanfront condo buildings.

The Village Council voted 3-2 to deny the ordinance on second reading last month. Councilman Martin Packer proposed the ordinance, saying businesses should be located at The Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., which is known for housing a collection of luxury retail.

If the ordinance would have been approved, it would have prohibit a storefront entrance to a business in the district on the eastside of Collins Avenue except for restaurants and health spas. Businesses like florist and travel agencies would not have been permitted.

There are 13 condominiums on the oceanfront on Collins Avenue. The ordinance does not apply to hotels.

There are currently some businesses in the condominiums located in the ocean front district. Currently, the Balmoral has a family and general dentistry and a gourmet shop, while The Palace Condo has the Bal Harbour Professional Cleaners.
