Traffic alert: Truck crash closes southbound lanes on road to the Keys

A crash involving three trucks has shut down southbound lanes leading to the Florida Keys at U.S. 1 at mile marker 120. Traffic is being diverted to Card Sound Road.

The crash and rollover in South Miami-Dade near the Monroe County line happened before 4 a.m. Monday, but the cleanup continues.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash was triggered when the driver of a dump truck tried to stop when he saw a pedestrian walking on the road shoulder. When he hit the brakes, his dump truck overturned. A second dump truck was unable to stop and struck the first one and also overturned. A tractor-trailer then hit the second dump truck.

The two dump trucks were loaded with gravel. The three drivers were taken to Homestead Hospital. The pedestrian was not hurt.
