Sunglasses are such a huge part of South Florida life, we wanted to get the 411 on what’s hot and what’s not for the new year. Since the stars often set the trends we chatted with Eden Wexler, Celebrity Shades Consultant (yes, that’s her title) for Solstice Sunglasses, with locations on Lincoln Road and at Aventura Mall.

Who are the “It” designers and styles right now?

Celine is one of the hottest new brands we’re carrying. Gucci, Dior and Carrera are always top sellers in the Miami market. The cat eye for women is probably the biggest “it” sunglass shape. Vintage inspired silhouettes — rounds, aviators and wayfarer — are all hot for men.

How many shades should we own in general in a sunny climate?

If your budget can allow it, it’s good to have at least one casual/sporty pair — polarized lenses are great — one dressier/fashion pair and one fun pair in a bright color or uber trendy styling.

Bright? In what colors?

Anything in a jewel tone: red, burgundy, plum, violet, blue and emerald green. Especially in Miami, blush tones are also very big.

What should we know before we head out shopping?

Mid- and oversized rounded silhouettes for men and women are trending right now. They have a vintage, quirky feel to them. Various nuances in textures and colors continue to make this silhouette seem fresh and new. Mirrored lenses have also made a comeback. Various brands are offering super convenient foldable glasses that fit easily in small handbags or suit jackets.

What’s hot in Hollywood and beyond?

In particular, translucent, see-through colors seem to really be trending and run the gamut from crystal clear to gemstone brights. Texture has become very important. Frame fronts and/or sides are now featuring interesting tactile finishes with a unique and luxe feel. Dior has a series of styles that provides a tweed textured look without the glasses actually being made of tweed.

What celebs have you seen wearing what?

Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell have been seen in Dior Homme smaller square rectangular shape sunglasses. Dior cat eyes were seen on Krysten Ritter, Nikki Reed and Natalie Portman out and about. Charlize Theron was spotted in Marc by Marc Jacobs. Emily Blunt was in Kate Spades in L.A. Jennifer Lopez has been spotted in the Gucci Floras as well as Roberto Cavallis. We’ve seen Dominic Cooper, Adrien Grenier, Erin Heatherton and Chrissy Teigen all in New York City wearing the Carrera 6000s.

How do celebs use sunglasses to their advantage?

Sunglasses are celebrities’ most important accessory. Whether to top off an uber-stylish outfit or create a certain level of mystery.
