The Dec. 14 article, The island that Miami forgot, reminded me of the first time I went to Monument Island with the Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches. I was shocked and dismayed to see such a beautiful island filled with trash and the Henry Flagler Monument disgraced with graffiti and crumbling.
Since then, ECOMB and the City of Miami Beach have succeeded in keeping Monument Island clean and pristine thanks to monthly cleanups. Not only is the island cleaner and safer, but the Flagler monument has been restored to its natural beauty and is illuminated once again.
If this can be accomplished on Monument Island, it can also be accomplished on Bird Key with a little help from other environmental groups and the city of Miami.
Thank you to ECOMB’s director Luiz Rodriguez, and to William Carey of the Miami Beach planning department, for all their work in making this possible and showing others the way.
