Tonya Thompson loves her job — traveling across America with Mary Poppins. Especially one number.
The actress, 25, plays gingerbread shop owner Mrs. Corry, and she says the audience really gets moving during the famed Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
“When you run out of things to say this is what you come up with — this huge, 34 letter word,” explains Thompson, who is originally from Biscayne Gardens. “Singing this is honestly like being shot out of a cannon — the adrenaline. Each time it’s gets faster and faster.”
The fictitious word is a mouthful, for sure: 16 vowels and 18 consonants. “I know people are looking at us all cross-eyed thinking, ‘How in the world do they sing that?’ It’s an art, definitely!”
Thompson, who went to Miami Northwestern Senior High School and currently calls NYC home, gives the younger cast mates a lot of credit.
“These kids are amazing. They hold the whole show together.” (See calendar for ticket info.)
