Learn to make Haitian pumpkin soup

 

For a double dose of 2013 luck, have 12 grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve, then cook a batch of soupe joumou — traditional Haitian pumpkin soup — on New Year’s Day.

Storyteller and author Liliane Nerette-Louis will teach you how at a class in her North Miami home from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Cost is $20, with fish paté on the menu as well.

Nerette-Louis, who is a contributor to the new anthology So Spoke the Earth: The Haiti I Knew, the Haiti I Know, the Haiti I Want to Know, also has classes scheduled Jan. 6 (griyo, fried plantains and pickliz) and Jan. 26 (legumes with beef and crabs and red pea puree).
