Haitian National Police are investigating the origin of a flash grenade found at an intersection leading into a fancy hillside Port-au-Prince neighborhood.
Miguel Alston, a spokesman for the United Nations Police in Haiti, said the grenade was found by two HNP officers at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Thomassin and Morne Calvaire. Morne Calvaire is located in the hills above Petionville and is known for mansions that would be at home in Miamis most luxurious neighborhoods as well as for favela-type slums.
UNPOL was called in and confirmed that it could be a real one about 2 p.m., Alston said. The perimeter around the area was quickly secured. It was later discovered the device was a flash grenade, a non-lethal explorsive that produces a large blinding flash.
So far the incident appears to be an isolated one. Alston said HNP is leading the investigation into the grenades origin and who may have placed it at the intersection.
